Kai at 5 weeks

The kid is doing great! 10 lbs and counting. We can't quite get used to having a baby who's actually in the average range for weight (huh?) What can I say, he loves to eat, this one. Emerging out of the pet rock phase slowly but surely....he loves to stare at the windows, the lights, and our faces (especially at Zander). We've even seen some little smiles already - hurray!

Kai Nathaniel Kopplin

Birth Story

Kai Nathaniel Kopplin was born on July 28th at 2:14am. He weighed in at 6 lbs 14 oz and was 19 1/2 inches long. I had been having false labor for 5-6 days prior to his arrival...and boy was I getting impatient! Finally on Sunday night around 9:30 while we were watching Mad Men, the contractions starting coming more regularly and in her words "hey, these hurt!" We called Grandma Sue to come on over and we both took showers and finished packing a couple of bags for the hospital. Neil had the stopwatch around his neck and was following me around to make sure he got every contraction timed perfectly. We left for the hospital at 11pm while Zander slept, none the wiser :) After a brief stint in triage where we learned that I was already between 4 and 5 cm dialated, we checked into our room. I toyed with the idea of waiting a bit to get the epidural but the pain was getting pretty intense so I gave the green light. It's a good thing I did...
I was progressing quickly and the nurse thinks that when I got the epidural I was probably already at 8-9cm. Ouch. Right after the epidural was administered I settled in for what I assumed would be a few hours of labor. But the dr checked me shortly thereafter and declared that I was at 10 cm. It was time to push. Neil and I looked at each other and I said, baffled, "but we JUST got here!?" Four pushes later, Kai popped out, looked around and peed on everyone. Then he started sucking his thumb. They plopped him on my chest and I thought, wow that was fast! He was perfect.

South Dakota Visit May 08

We had a wonderful visit to Grandma and Grandpa K's house last month. We got to spend lots of time with Aunt Dawn and Uncle Chad as well as Zander's cousins Ethan, Emma and Bryce. Zander roamed the farm, got to go fishing for the first time, watched his Dad shoot gophers from the back porch and had his ceremonial ride on Grandpa K's rider mower.

Zander update, and a potty training story you won't want to miss

First things first, Zander continues to amaze us with his speech and language progress. He's truly "taking off." At home he is speaking in 2-3 sometimes 4 word combos instead of just one word at a time. He's also counting to 20 all by himself! He continues to repeat EVERYTHING which is only helping in his learning process. This is also teaching us the valuable lesson of 'watch out what you say' because you'll hear it again. And again. And again. The good news is he's starting to understand how to take certain words/phrases and use them on his own, in the correct contexts. This is VERY encouraging. For example, the other day I went to put something in the garbage outside and wasn't wearing any shoes. When I came back he told me "outside - barefeet - not good!" (I'm always telling him he can't go outside in barefeet). Apparently he's listening. He's also demonstrating a strong understanding of plurals and possession, which is a few steps ahead of where's he's at in his speech development (interesting!).

We've been working on potty training. Having not had much luck with the mini-potty, we got him an Elmo potty seat (the kind that you put on the "big" potty) and he enjoys sitting on it. One thing at a time, right? The other afternoon we had been working on potty training in his bathroom. I left the bathroom for a while to see if maybe my constant presence was holding him back. A few minutes later he emerged from the bathroom (with no pants on, mind you) with the Elmo potty seat wedged snugly on his HEAD and declared "Happy Easter!"

He's truly one of a kind and we wouldn't have it any other way...
More pictures to come. Stay tuned.
